Yardening 2004

Big projects for the yarden this year!

I developed a sort of master plan for the back yard and split it into several phases. Phase I was to replace the back porch covering. It used to be tin held up by a wooden frame. The wood was rotting and literally falling apart. It let little light in, offered little view and just generally looked bad. I replaced it with this:
Pergola

Phase II was to extend the sitting area a bit as well as add some seating.
Patio

Now that these two phases are complete, the back porch is a place we will want to spend more time. These pictures were all taken June 5th... the morning of Joshua's 2nd birthday party.

Here you can see the edge of the dogpin on the right and the side yard. I'm thinking about adding an arch between the planters and letting the morning glories grow up together on top of it. There may also be a walkpath added to the dogpin.
In this shot you can definitely see that the siding needs to be replaced. The green thing is a sandbox shaped like a turtle.
The vines on the trellis will eventually grow up on top of the pergola giving shade and some early spring color. The bed against the house is shaded almost the entire day... I'll have to find some nice things to plant there.
This flowerbed is under construction. It's tucked away behind the dogpin in the corner of the yard. The tin will eventually be cut back to open up the view some. More plants will be added to be more visually appealing. Right now there's a Carolina Jessamine, a crape myrtle and some antique rose bush cuttings here.
Looking back you can see the pecan tree has grown significantly over the time we've lived in the house. The Lady Banks rose has grown almost 12" since it was placed in the ground. I'm hoping it'll be on top of the pergola by this time next year.
The dogpin isn't the prettiest thing in the backyard, but it's in the best spot for it right now. After the pups are gone, I can take down the fence and trim back the tin.

Upcoming projects include re-siding the house, an improved surface for the grill and an improved walking pathway from the fence to the patio and to the garden. There's lots of landscaping and plants still to do, too!

I have a whole separate page for my roses and will add more pictures of my other plants and landscaping as they get done.
